Westbury in Bloom 2008

A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE FLOWERS IN WESTBURY IN 2008!

This has included donations from many individuals and businesses in Westbury-on-Trym and every single contribution has been very gratefully received!
Your generosity enabled us to have the full complement of hanging baskets for the lamp posts and all the tubs and troughs throughout the village! This excellent level of response not only showed how much you enjoy the flowers and how much you care about the environment you  live in but it really makes all the hard work involved worth it!

Thanks also to all the volunteers who worked hard in helping to bring the funds in; those who helped with the street collection and  all of you who delivered the gift aid envelopes throughout the village. A big thank you too to the volunteers who have helped (and are still helping!) with the plants generally, clearing the weeds, planting and also to those who look after the Pack Horse Garden. Blaise Nurseries were also very supportive.

This has been a real community effort!   So well done everyone!

As many of you know in 2008 we won the  gold medal for the Bristol in Bloom’s ‘Best Shopping Area/Street’ award and also gained a R.H.S. ‘Neighbourhood Award’ (which looks  at all environmental factors coming under the ‘clean and green’ umbrella includes weed, litter, and graffiti free streets, re-cycling measures as well as attractive flowers displays and sustainable planting. It also looks at the involvement of all the community in this so more volunteers to help with this are very welcome –

Some 65 businesses were official sponsors of Westbury in Bloom 2008 (their names are also on the notice board in Carlton court).  They have paid for a hanging basket for their own premises, sponsored a tub or hanging basket and/or made a donation of  £30 or more towards all the flowers for the village.

Blooming Marvelous

It was a ‘Win Win’ again this year for the Westbury in Bloom team. As well as providing the local community with a beautiful display of flowers, we also won 2 awards!

For the 5th year running we were awarded the gold medal for the ‘Best Shopping Area/Street by Bristol in Bloom. The second win was ‘Outstanding Achievement’ for the Royal Horticultural Society’s Top Neighbourhood Award. The Neighbourhood awards cover not only the introduction of floral displays and sustainable planting but also management of recycling, graffiti, litter and weeds. This is to encourage local communities to become ‘cleaner and greener’ so they can enjoy living, working and shopping in a pleasant environment.

So whether you kindly donated money, sponsored tubs and baskets, delivered yellow envelopes, stood on the street collecting money, planted flowers, or did some weeding - well done for these awards and many thanks to you!

We are now collecting for this year’s flowers and all contributions will be gratefully received. Why not give friends and family the gift of a contribution to ‘Westbury in Bloom 2009’ on their behalf, or sponsor a tub for them (cost £60 for a whole tub, £30 for half a tub).

Please send details and payment  to Sue Boyd (cheques payable to ‘The Westbury Flower Fund, Westbury on Trym Society’)
