About the Westbury on Trym Society

The Westbury on Trym Society is a voluntary organization, set up in 1972, originally to look after the amenities, landscape and historic settings of this 1200 year old village. Most neighbourhoods now have a residents’ or conservation society but the Westbury-on-Trym Society can claim to have been one of the first to be set up in the Bristol area, over 35 years ago! There have been four chairmen in that time: John Lodge, (the founder), Professor Brian Pickering, Roger Smith and Hilary Long. We currently have no elected chairman and the committee manage activities on a rotating basis

It is a registered charity (Registered Charity 265486) and exists entirely on voluntary help and membership subscriptions.

We hold 6 open meetings a year between September and March in the Village Hall on the last Monday of the month, each with a speaker on a different and interesting topic.

This is your chance to make contact with members of the committee in person if there is anything you want to ask us. We have a formal committee of 11 but can always find room for more and currently have lots of places available!

If it hadn’t been for the Society getting going on a campaign as it was founded in 1972, there would be no Village Hall - it would have been demolished to make way for flats!

The committee meets once a month to discuss current business and organize activities and campaigns. Between meetings we work hard for the community:-

·
Trying to make sure that Westbury is a pleasant place to live and work in by the provision of flowers in our pots around the village centre. We have won Bristol in Bloom Awards for Westbury 4 years running
·
Monitoring all planning applications made for change of use of shops, the redevelopment of existing buildings and the erection of new ones
·
Commenting on all aspects of the architectural, landscape and traffic impact of those applications. We support and try to shape those which enhance the character, amenity and future vitality of the village and oppose those which we consider to be detrimental to the character of Westbury and the convenience of its residents. Take a look at our planning policy for more details.
·
Looking after the Packhorse Garden in the heart of the village
·
We support other campaign groups where appropriate and give advice where we can
·
Members receive newsletters three times a year with articles on local events and history
·
Last year we completed and continue to market a film about Westbury’s history made for us by ex-BBC producer, Keith Sheather
